As per WebMD Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a test that uses powerful magnets, radio waves, and a computer to make detailed pictures of the inside of your body. The page in that link also tells the severe health problems in which a MRI scan would help.

I’m sure many of us have heard this word before and some might have already gone through the process.  Now what made me write today about MRI which is a purely medical technology thing!! I’m sure you have watched on TV or read in some news paper about the recent accident in a hospital involving a MRI machine. Till today I too like many others was thinking that it’s just a medical diagnosis process. But this accident made me think and read more about it to find more details about the machine and the few things to keep in mind while going for the test.

Given below are some of the accidents that happened involving a MRI machine:

  1. Man dies after being sucked into MRI machine: According to this report, an attendant of a patient carried an oxygen cylinder to the MRI room and the magnetic field of the machine pulled the cylinder along with the person with brute force. It looks like negligence on part of the hospital staff, however it doesn’t harm to do our own homework before going for such a diagnosis.
  2. Technician got stuck to MRI machine: In this case a technician was sandwiched between a MRI machine and a ward boy carrying oxygen cylinder for about 4 hours. The switch off button was disabled by the manufacturer of the machine and hence the technician could be freed only after an engineer of the manufacturing company arrived. The reason was same in this case too, the ward boy carried in to the MRI room an oxygen cylinder by mistake.

  3. Wheelchair ended up STUCK to MRI machine: The family of a patient brought a wheel chair in to the MRI scanning room, soon after the machine was turned off; however the magnetic field was still so strong that it sucked up the wheel chair causing damage to the machine. You may go through the link for details.

Above examples imply that MRI is not just a simple medical diagnosis method, it involves a very powerful MRI machine and that needs some do’s and don’t’s to remember while entering into the scanning room. Given below is a picture from the Deccan Chronicle news paper that gives us some advices to be careful about. It also shows a picture of another freak accident where fortunately none suffered any injury.
